Nobody warns you the wedding is the easy part.
The paperwork comes after. Most couples assume the name change process is something they can figure out on the fly. A few weeks pass. Then a few more. Then you’re booking a honeymoon flight and realize your ID doesn’t match the name you’ve been going by for two months.
Here’s what the process actually looks like, in the right order.
When to Start Changing Your Name
You cannot begin the name change process until you have a certified copy of your marriage certificate in hand. This is not the same as the paper your officiant signed at the ceremony.
Most county clerks in Tennessee process marriage certificates within two to four weeks after the ceremony. Once you receive your certified copy, you can begin. Starting before it arrives wastes time because every agency requires official documentation.
Order more certified copies than you think you need. Three to four is a reasonable starting point. You’ll submit originals in some cases and need to show the document in others.
Step 1: Social Security Administration
The Social Security Administration is your first stop. Every other agency you’ll visit verifies against your Social Security record. If you start somewhere else, you create a mismatch in the system and it slows everything down.
You can update your record in person at your local SSA office or by mail. Online updates are not available for name changes.
What to bring to Social Security Office:
- Your certified marriage certificate
- A current government-issued photo ID
- Proof of citizenship if requested (usually a U.S. passport or birth certificate)
Processing typically takes two to four weeks. You’ll receive a new Social Security card with your updated name. Wait until your record is confirmed updated before moving to the next step.
Step 2: Driver's License or State ID
Once your Social Security record reflects your new name, visit your state’s DMV or driver services office.
Tennessee residents will need to visit a Driver Services Center in person. Online updates are not available for name changes in Tennessee.
What to bring to the DMV in Tennessee:
- Your updated Social Security card or confirmation of the update
- Your certified marriage certificate
- Your current driver’s license
- Proof of Tennessee residency (a utility bill or bank statement works)
Residents of other states should check their state’s DMV website directly before visiting. Requirements vary significantly. Some states accept mail-in requests. Others require an in-person visit with a specific set of documents.
Expect to surrender your current license and leave with a temporary document while your new card is printed and mailed.
Step 3: Passport Updates
If you’re planning to travel internationally, your passport name needs to match your airline tickets and booking confirmations exactly. This is not a technicality. It’s an entry requirement.
Two situations apply:
If your passport is less than one year old, you can request a free name change using Form DS-5504 by mail. No renewal fee applies.
If your passport is more than one year old, you’ll apply for a new passport using Form DS-82 and pay the standard renewal fee.
What to bring to a passport acceptance facility:
Completed application form (DS-5504 or DS-82 depending on your situation)
Your current passport
Your certified marriage certificate
A new passport photo
Payment for applicable fees
Standard processing currently runs eight to eleven weeks. Expedited processing runs three to five weeks for an additional fee. If your travel is within six months, apply as soon as your Social Security and driver’s license updates are complete.
Do not wait until the week before an international trip to handle this. I have spoken with couples who learned this lesson the hard way and spent their pre travel week on hold with the National Passport Information Center.
An important note about booking travel
For immediate travel after your wedding, book flights, hotels, cruises, tours, and any other travel arrangements in the exact name appearing on your current passport. Your passport, airline tickets, and travel reservations must all match.
If your passport is still in your maiden name, continue booking travel in your maiden name until your passport has been updated. A name mismatch can create delays, additional documentation requirements, or even denied boarding.
The good news is there is no deadline to update your passport after marriage. Once your Social Security card and driver’s license have been updated, you can submit your passport name change whenever it makes sense for your travel plans.
One important thing to remember: once you submit an application for a passport renewal or name change, your current passport is no longer valid for travel. If you have international travel planned and your passport is still in your maiden name, use that passport for your trip and wait until you return home to begin the name change process. Do not submit your passport application before travel and assume you can continue using your existing passport.
There is no need to postpone your honeymoon or international travel while waiting to update your passport. Simply make sure all travel reservations match the name currently shown on the passport you will be using for the trip.
Step 4: Employer and Payroll Records
Contact your HR department or payroll provider as soon as your Social Security record is updated. Your W-2 at the end of the year needs to reflect your legal name, and payroll records need to match your Social Security information.
Most employers will ask for a copy of your marriage certificate and your updated government-issued ID. The process varies by company, but most HR teams handle name updates quickly once you submit the request.
Also update your name with:
- Your bank and all financial accounts
- Health insurance carrier
- Life insurance policies
- Voter registration
- Vehicle registration and car insurance
- Professional licenses
One important note regarding vehicle registrations: if your vehicle is financed or leased, the title may be held by a lienholder or leasing company. In some cases, additional paperwork or approval from the lender may be required before your name can be updated on the title and registration. Contact your lender and local DMV or county clerk’s office to confirm the process for your specific vehicle.
The bank and insurance updates are the ones couples tend to remember last. Adding them to the list now saves a frustrating call when something requires them.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Skipping the Social Security step first.
Every other agency verifies against your Social Security record. Starting with your driver’s license before updating Social Security creates a mismatch and causes delays you don’t want.
Waiting too long before an international trip.
Passport processing takes weeks, not days. If you’re planning a honeymoon outside the United States, prioritize this step and give yourself as much lead time as possible. Expedited processing helps, but it’s not instant.
Forgetting the bank.
You’ll notice this one the first time you write a check or update a direct deposit. Add it to the list now.
Mismatched records on travel documents.
Airlines, cruise lines, hotels, and tour operators require your reservation name to match your identification documents. If your passport is still in your maiden name, continue booking travel in your maiden name until your passport is updated. If your passport has already been updated, all future travel should be booked in your married name. The key is consistency. Your passport, airline tickets, and travel reservations should all match exactly.
A Note for Non-Tennessee Residents
The steps above apply broadly, but the DMV process varies by state. Some states offer online name changes. Others require documents not listed here. Before visiting your state DMV, check the official website for current requirements.
